When wellbeing becomes more than just a personal commitment and is embraced as a leadership priority, it sends a powerful message of support and care. Recently, as a part of Flywire’s Wellbeing Month, we hosted a series of virtual Global Coffee Chats in which Execs, senior leaders, and FlyMates from across the company came together to share authentic stories, practical tips, and personal reflections on what matters when it comes to nourishing their wellbeing.
From balancing self-care to exploring everyday tips and tricks, the conversations were open, honest, and inspiring. Here are our takeaways.
Surround yourself with support
Community is at the heart of wellbeing. Whether it's your family, friends, fur-babies, or support circle, being surrounded by people who lift you up makes all the difference. Lean on them for support when you need it and return the favor by offering a helping hand. Community flourishes when we are there for one another.
Wake up and choose positivity
When it comes to achieving happiness, it’s important to remember that optimism is a choice. You don’t have to wait for life to be perfect to find joy. Start by looking inward and practice reframing your thoughts to set yourself up for success. Optimism is a muscle, and the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
Schedule a check in with yourself
Life moves pretty fast and sometimes, we can benefit from a self check-in. Every six months, make a list. Write down who and what surrounds you - your job, habits, relationships, routines, and ask yourself: Is this helping or hindering my wellbeing? Adjust accordingly. Growth starts with awareness and continues with intention.
Find joy in the small things
Journaling, birdwatching, gardening, playing mahjong, watching sunsets, the list goes on and on. Celebrate the small and simple joys in life. Some FlyMates shared their love for dark humour, others swore by podcasts that inspire and entertain. One FlyMate even recommended writing a love letter to yourself. Whatever the joy may be, relish in it.
Work smarter for an elevated Slack experience
Slack is a great way to stay connected, but it can also be distracting without the right approach. To avoid Slack overwhelm, try using the “later” function to manage tasks without losing focus, organize star channels for quick access, and pin key messages or files. Custom statuses also help signal when you’re focusing or taking a break, and muting or archiving channels will help keep your workspace clutter-free.
Other wellbeing hacks we loved
During these chats, FlyMates shared a vibrant mix of go-to habits they practice to take care of themselves. Some were energising, others were calming, and all of them came from a place of self-care:
- Get an intense workout in to reset your brain and release stress
- Use a standing or walking desk or put an outdoor walk on your calendar to increase movement throughout your day
- Regain focus by doing cold plunges or taking cold showers
- Listen to music to help you focus, get into the zone, or even fall asleep
- Exercise your creative muscles by drawing, painting, or cooking a meal from scratch
- Make a list to reduce mental clutter and anxiety
- Wake up early to take advantage of quiet mornings to practice self care and get a head start on your to-do list
- Disconnect from the digital world by putting your phone away to take a break from the constant online chatter and feel more present
- Use the Calm app to take part in meditations and guided breath work to ground yourself, reduce stress, improve sleep, and build emotional resilience
