The Opportunity:
Flywire thrives on developing and bringing to market innovative payments solutions. To support our continued growth worldwide, Flywire is seeking a dedicated and experienced Payments Regulatory and Healthcare Counsel to lead these efforts. The role will report to the Assistant General Counsel in Boston.
Flywire operates within a complex global system of laws and regulations to provide our services to customers in the education, healthcare, travel and B2B sectors. The Legal team works cross-functionally and across multiple jurisdictions to create legal and regulatory strategies that facilitate the launch and growth of Flywire services globally. Our healthcare payments vertical has expanded following strategic acquisition activity, and larger strategic relationships are becoming more bespoke and customized, and intersect in various federal and state subject matter areas such as payments regulation, healthcare pricing and privacy. This will be a varied role working within our Legal team, helping lead the team’s review of payments regulatory issues (licensing, payables, money transmission, etc.), services, and other initiatives and negotiating sophisticated commercial contracts with a wide range of clients and partners. You will find yourself working closely with stakeholders from our Healthcare sales vertical, Compliance, Product, Global Payments, Risk and Business Operations functions. You should be comfortable supporting sometimes complicated, global and regulated services that require analysis on several fronts.
- Provide practical, risk-weighted advice on complex legal and regulatory matters related to new and existing services – particularly in the healthcare area (e.g., payment plans, payment methods, etc.)
- Anticipate and identify legal and regulatory risks and develop strategies to mitigate those risks
- Develop compliant global systems and processes to support Flywire’s service offerings, including regulatory and contractual playbooks
- Draft, review, update, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including client contracts and hospital/HC systems arrangements, and partnership agreements with financial institutions or card networks
- Collaborate with internal subject matter experts on topics such as AML, payments regulation, privacy, and security, and integrate their input into payment flows and contracts
- Monitor money transmission, payment network, and other laws and regulations that are relevant to our business
- Participate in ideation sessions with team members and across the business to create amazing service experiences with Flywire clients that comply with law
Here's What We're Looking For:
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school and membership in good standing to at least one state bar
- Experience advising corporate clients on payments products and services is required; 10+ years legal experience, preferably in a fast-paced, in-house environment or within a law firm (or both)
- Strong knowledge of laws and regulations regarding at least two of the following: card association rules, payment network rules (BACs, SEPA, and/or NACHA), consumer credit (FSMA 2000 Regulated Activities Order or CFPB regulations), or payments regulation (PSD2 or US state money transmission)
- Big plus if prior experience includes work within the healthcare payments or tech sector
- Experience working independently, cross-functionally, and across time zones and cultures
- Strong project management skills
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to partner with business partners worldwide, including Healthcare, Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Compliance, Security, and other members of the Legal team
- Strong communications skills, including ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical business partners
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
- A team player with patience and a good sense of humor
