Internal Career Mobility at Flywire

Flywire has always been a values-driven company. Execution, global collaboration, and evolved learning are just a few of the values we live by, and also how we ensure our FlyMates can build their careers of a lifetime here. For example, every year we do an engagement survey, which provides our FlyMates the opportunity to share things they’d like to experience here. One of the key takeaways from last year’s survey was that many FlyMates want the opportunity to explore new roles and responsibilities while still growing their careers at Flywire.

As a result, Flywire’s leadership team, in collaboration with the People Team, designed #OneFlywire, our internal career mobility program. Through this program, FlyMates have first line of sight into new job opportunities, and the full support of their people managers to explore roles in different departments. This results in dynamic, multifaceted teams that can quickly assemble to solve some of the biggest problems in delivering complex payments all around the world.

Since its launch, we’ve had 27 FlyMates participate in the initiative. We caught up with five of them in an interview below. Stay tuned for part two featuring four more FlyMates!

What were you looking for with internal mobility? Was it learning a new skill, using an old one, or learning more about Flywire?

“I wanted to use my numeric skills and banking credit analyst background which I really like.” -Emre Ozkan Sinar, is a Senior Credit Analyst working from Valencia, Spain. He was previously a Cash Management and Treasury Manager at Flywire.

“I wanted to continue working at Flywire, but knew that there were other teams and roles where I could utilize more of my existing strengths while getting pushed out of my comfort zone.” -Eric Frandsen is a Client Success Associate on our Travel team working remotely from Utah, U.S. He was previously a Client Experience Associate.

“I was looking for an opportunity to be a learner again and use my old QA skills to enhance my future product role. Until that point I onboarded four new QA FlyMates into our team so it was time for me to be the newbie somewhere else (taking advantage of my product knowledge acquired during the last six years at Flywire!).” -MCarmen Ramirez is a Product Manager working from Valencia, Spain. She was previously a QA Tester.

“After six years in Client and Payment Experience (CPE), I needed to grow and learn something new, as the growing path that CPE offered me was not what I was looking for. Learning new skills and entering the world of coding and the more "technical" side of Flywire is what drove me to change.” -Paola Scarfullery is a Solutions Specialist working from Valencia, Spain. They were previously a Client Experience Specialist.

“I was looking for a new career path and other ways to contribute to Flywire.” -Derrick Tan is a Business Intelligence Analyst working from Singapore. He was previously a Senior Associate in Cash Management & Treasury.

How has Flywire helped you grow your career?

“Flywire has given me the opportunity to move to a new department, which fits better to my skills and personality. And also, before moving to the department, they let me shadow the new department for a few days to see if the tasks fit my needs.” -Emre Ozkan Sinar, is a Senior Credit Analyst working from Valencia, Spain.

“Flywire has helped me identify my natural strengths and abilities which I have been able to incorporate into my new role helping me feel a great deal of fulfillment.” -Eric Frandsen is a Client Success Associate on our Travel team working remotely from Utah, U.S.

“First of all, the dedication of my previous manager, Marta Garrido, carefully hearing all of my needs and goals. She has always provided me the best to keep growing in my career inside Flywire. In fact, that support she gave me, was an important piece of my wellness, adding power to my confidence to look for a career change. Secondly, the rest of the FlyMates and my new manager Jaume. They always encouraged me to keep going and achieve my change because for me it was so exciting.” -MCarmen Ramirez is a Product Manager working from Valencia, Spain.

“From the very beginning in my professional career, Flywire has given me opportunities to grow, over and over again. Flywire was my first job when I was 21. From a temporary worker to a full time employee, to my transition from Customer Support to Client Experience, and now helping me grow into my current Solutions Specialist position. Not only in terms of position, Flywire also offered me courses, languages and conferences to grow professionally, and helped me get the necessary technical knowledge to transition to a department that required more than what I had at the moment.” -Paola Scarfullery is a Solutions Specialist working from Valencia, Spain.

“Being at Flywire has given me a whole new perspective of the world and why the payments space is such a big and complicated world that isn't always visible to everyone. So I felt I wanted to be in a fintech company that is having a significant impact in the world of payments. I'm lucky that Flywire is a company that is doing exactly that.” -Derrick Tan is a Business Intelligence Analyst working from Singapore.
