Interviewing at the best of times can be a nerve-racking experience for most (throw social distancing and virtual interviews into the mix and it’s a completely different ball game), however from my very first interaction with Flywire, everyone has been extremely welcoming and supportive.

The interview process gave me a great insight into the company culture and management style, and it quickly became apparent that Flywire was more than just an employer - they are a community where colleagues are referred to as ‘FlyMates’. The environment is collaborative where everyone looks out for each other with everyone’s best interests at heart.

Flywire was founded 9 years ago by an international student named Iker who had difficulty transferring his tuition fees from his home country in Spain, to MIT in the United States. He thought there must be an easier way to do this, so he set out to develop a solution to improve the way students send education payments, and since then we’ve continued to grow.

Despite having a background in the higher education payment industry, there is a lot to learn to understand the complexities of moving money across the globe. To aid this process, all new FlyMates participate in a virtual Flying Start induction programme. This training programme provides all new employees with a deep dive into the world of global payments; from varying country and market requirements, to integrating with university systems and providing payment plan options (both international and domestic), all the way through to the relationships we have with partners and education recruitment agents around the world.

The programme also includes a blended approach to learning, with both live webinars and pre-recorded training modules, with a group of FlyMates from across the globe. The aim is to set new FlyMates up for success in their role by providing a foundational knowledge of Flywire’s products, industry, departments, and people. New FlyMates are fully immersed into the FlyMate culture and values, which help to create a feeling of belonging, loyalty and connection with the wider Flywire team from day one.

This training helped prepare me to get a head start in my role as Relationship Manager, where I support a number of higher education institutions across the UK by helping to streamline incoming payments and enhance the payer experience. The end result not only helps foster collaborative relationships, but also helps institutions drive cost savings and improve efficiencies.

Flywire has been solving complex payment problems for students and education institutions since 2011. Today, we continue to remove boundaries by connecting millions of students with more than 2,000 institutions to improve the payment experience worldwide. Backed by our powerful global payment network, Flywire’s comprehensive receivables solution delivers on life's most important moments by enabling institutions to seamlessly receive and reconcile payments from anyone, anywhere in the world–at any time.
